The Jericho

Space — a frontier so enchanting, inspiring, and incomparably beautiful, the mere mention of it excites and inspires some foundational human element in me.

Serving as the Stanford Rockets team co-lead since 2018, I oversaw the group’s growth into the single largest project-student group at Stanford with 80+ active members. From developing the team curriculum, managing 5 figure finances, to navigating compliance with university and law, we worked hard to makes Rockets at Stanford the place to be.

This page details my contributions towards our team in the largest collegiate rocketry competition in the world - the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) and our special projects team, Spaceshot.

For Your Consideration… The Jericho

The Jericho is a beautifully portable dessert wine transporter/chiller inspired by the 2008 blockbuster, Iron Man. A gift for my father, it was designed and manufactured as part of Stanford PRL’s course in design and manufacturing.

“I am Iron Man

I can still recall the surprise in the movie theater as Tony Stark spoke those immortal words.

That’s right, the 2008 blockbuster that kicked off a whole interconnected universe of superheroes movies practically blew apart my nine-year-old mind. But no, Tony Stark wasn’t a favorite superhero of mine because he was a charismatic billionaire. Nor was it because he built himself an incredible suit of power-armor. Instead, it’s because of how he inspired me and my dad.

In fact, my dad was sitting right next to me in the theater.

In the late 2000s, my family decided that we would immigrate to the United States, in large part for my education. And although that didn’t happen for another 8 years, we began to prepare for the largest move for the family yet.

And of course, Iron Man happened.

It was everything I thought America represented. The technology hub of the world. The home of the self-made success stories and of overcoming the odds, of where brilliant insights mean being invited into the history books and where true impacts could be made. Where the individual was powerful. I remember my father’s excitement for this “promise land”. It was infectious, and somehow, “Iron Man” captured it.

With that, the Jericho (inspired by Tony’s name for the weapon system he tests at the start of the movie) is a beautifully portable dessert wine transporter/chiller for my father. It is inspired by the aesthetic of Stark Industries and specifically, a prop from the clip.

Final Product

Finally, my father and I can find a nice picnic spot on a sunny day and toast to making it to the new world.
